James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. ~The only difference between me and the sinner is the blood of Jesus. The only difference between me and a homosexual is that I allow the word of God to govern my life, my desires, and my appetites. The only difference between me and the drug addict is the anointing of God breaking the power of addiction off of my life. I am no longer who I used to be because of the blood of Jesus AND because I, by faith, applied it in my life.
The word ‘receive’ is an action word. It means to accept, to take as one’s own with action. To get a hold of, to obtain. I know many people who say that they are Christians because they recite a prayer and say that they have accepted Jesus as their savior yet there is no transformation of their life. James warns in this same chapter to not be hearers of the word only but to be doers. For when we only hear the word and we don’t apply it to our lives to bring forth change, we deceive our own selves. Salvation is not something that God just bestows upon us because of something we have said. No, salvation is God partnering with us through relationship so that we can be set free of the enemy’s grasp and influence and come into liberty and freedom through Christ Jesus. God gives us grace, a supernatural substance that empowers us to change when we hear the word and choose by faith to apply it in our lives. Being a Christian does not mean that we hear the word of God and continue to live how we have always lived in the past but we choose to allow God to teach us and instruct us by his word. When we choose to allow this process to take place in our lives, that’s when the blessings of God begin to overtake us and we are changed from the inside out. Let’s purpose in our hearts to not be hearers only but let’s allow God’s word to direct our sets and govern our lives.
