1 John 2:6,28 He that saith he abideth in him ought also so to walk, even as he walked. And now, little children, abide in him: that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. ~ Being Christ-like is not something done out of discipline or the works of the flesh. It’s not a self-helps type of thing where we try to be a better person. But it happens by abiding in the word of God and allowing the life of God to come forth and be developed in us. We are called trees of righteousness in the Bible.
A tree starts out as a seed. All that the tree becomes already resides in the seed that is planted. The seed abides in the soil and is watered. Through the natural germination process of that seed, over time the fullness of the tree comes forth. That is how it is with us. When we are born again, the seed of the Spirit of Christ is planted in us. As we water that seed with the word of God, that seed begins to grow. And as we continue to abide in the word, we become fully developed trees bearing the fruit of Christ.
Sometimes I think we make Christianity way too hard and go about it the wrong way. That is why people struggle to be a Christian. They try to do it by disciplining themselves to be something. A tree doesn’t fight to be a tree, it’s a tree through the natural process of living.
