1 Peter 5:2-4 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly: not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind: neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. ~ This passage of scripture deals with the motive of the heart. Matthew 5 says that only those who are pure in heart will see God. The motive of the heart is determined by the choices and decisions we make. God’s word reveals unto us the way that Christians are supposed to live and empowers us through grace to live it. God’s word is a great light and a two edged sword. It has in it the power to not only reveal the hidden things of the heart but if we allow it, it empowers us to be changed. When we willingly submit ourselves to its influence and government, God is able to remove those things that are not of his nature and kingdom and in doing so brings us more into his image and nature. We also see in this passage of scripture that when we choose to align ourselves with his word and live in accordance with it, there is a great eternal reward that is more valuable and more precious than anything this world has to offer. It is imperative for us as Christians to discover what the word of God says. And as God opens us up to the wisdom and understanding of his word and we choose to embrace it and appropriate it in our lives, he will come and make his abode with us. But if we choose not to obey, not to hearken, he will eventually withdraw himself from us and turn us over to a reprobate mind. That is a dangerous place to be in — all because of choices we make. Let’s make every effort to make ourselves available to hear the word of God and to make choices that align with it. For in it is life, health, vitality, and joy!
